Although the Ranching Life is
their main livelihood, it didn’t start out that way. Their
grandparents, Dale and Ruby Perry came to Leoti in the early 1900’s. |
|
Farming
had taken root in this early settlement, but a little livestock
was always raised for food.
Dale and Ruby also owned a cabin and motel in Grand Lake,
Colorado where they spent their summers after the farming was done. |
|
Soon after Dale and Ruby were married,
along came a son, Don ... and as he grew so did his love for horses and cattle. In 1964 Don married Rita Harkness. Rita was a native from Leoti as well. Her father was a Blacksmith in
the early days of Wichita County. Don and Rita met while she was working for Ruby during the summers at
the cabin. A year after Don and Rita were married they had their first son, J.D.,
followed by a second son, Jeff, the next year. Seven years later,
any dreams for a girl were soon forgotten with the birth of their third son, Jason.

The
Perry boys ... third and fourth
generation, still ranching in Kansas.
The
boys grew up farming, raising cattle, and riding
horses. Don had several Percheron horses
at the time that were used for farming purposes.
The boys developed their own herd of cows as
their father founded the “Perry Cattle
Company.” Don instilled good work ethics
in each of his boys, which has enabled them to
branch out and find their own interest in the
wide range of Ranching and Farm life.
J.D. and Jeff have a Swathing and Baling
business, run cattle and still ride horses from
time to time. Jason developed his own
business as well, Perry Performance Horses.
Jason and his wife, Kendra, have a
son who seems to be following in their bootsteps.
